Serial killers and teenagers display many of the same qualities. How is teenage love and serial killer obsession similar? Let's talk about it while we explore "Tear You Apart" by She Wants Revenge.

Well, I’m back again, dark passengers and surprise surprise, I’ve got another song with lyrics that make me think about serial killers. If I’m honest, I found this one last night when I was writing Somewhere a Clock is Killing, but I wanted to focus on one brand of serial killer music at a time.

And tonight, we’ve got the teenage serial killer.

Okay…sort of. Here’s the thing, if you listen to ‘Tear You Apart’ by She Wants Revenge, you’ll notice two things about it:

It’s talking about a teenage crush

Some of the lyrics, once again, are a bit disturbing

Now, keep in mind that when I say disturbing, I’m not just talking about weird sex, which might be going on for purposes of the song – I don’t know – I’m talking about some of the lyrics going to the “hey, I think I’m in love with you, so can I tie you up in my basement and do some dirty crazy stuff to you until I decide to kill you in an equally dirty crazy way? It’ll be fun. I’ve got candy and puppies” kind of way.

Side note: I’m totally creeped out right now by the picture suggestions that are coming up in my contextual picture menu. Apparently, weird sex, serial killer and basement are NOT keywords you want in the same post because it makes Zemanta think I’d be interested in sadistic fetish porn.

Seriously, is there anything not allowed under the category public domain? Sheesh!

Sorry. Anyway.

On an episode of Criminal Minds I saw a while back they stated that teens displayed the same behavior as sociopaths. While not every sociopath is a serial killer (or vice versa), most serial killers ARE sociopaths in that they have no ability to feel emotions or empathy for other people. Granted, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that teenagers don’t have the ability to care about other people, just that they often choose not to.

Y’all…it’s totally getting hard to type this while Zemanta is trying to get me to use the picture of a bizarre torture device that I don’t want to know exists…

What I am struck by in the song is how similar teenage love is to serial killer “love.” Go with me on this. For teenagers, everything is of dire importance. Every crush is the end all be all of their existence. Don’t misunderstand…I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with this. I mean, I think we’re all hard-wired to be melodramatic during the years that our brains finish developing. (Then again, I know some people who never actually grew out of the drama phase…)

But what about serial killers? I’m so glad you asked.

A serial killer runs into someone either by chance or their own design and becomes fixated on them, obsessed. Normal human interactions with this person aren’t enough for the serial killer because love is a confusing and foreign concept for them. Instead, they want to possess the object of their fixation. (Dahmer, for instance, kept body parts in his house and eventually ate pieces of his victims in order to keep his “love” with him forever.)

I could continue with this line of thought and cite more examples, but I’d rather hear from you. (And the torture device appears to actually be staring at me now…)

Oh, yeah…Went through some vids of this song on YouTube and found very few choices unless you want to see a mash-up of Harry Potter and Romeo & Juliet which was a major FAIL in my book. In the end, it was between the scene from ‘The Number 23′ featuring this song and the band’s music video. I went with the band’s vid because, the movie clip didn’t use the whole song and, well, I didn’t want to inflict my peeps with a poor quality Jim Carrey sex scene, even for 1:30…Then again, this music video is…erm…odd.

So, check out the song and then weigh in on it. Do you see the ways teens are like serial killers or how teenage love and serial killer obsession coincide?

Enjoy!

Jen

Song lyrics work hand in hand with the melody to evoke particular emotions within us, but what might it sound like if a serial killer were the one trying to get his message across to us? The song 'Somewhere a Clock is Ticking' by Snow Patrol may just tell us that.

Happy Wednesday, dark passengers! Over the last few days, I’ve been listening to a ton of music because I have a day job editing right now. (I know, you’d never know it from the condition of my posts here…) One song on my work playlist has a haunting melody, but I’d never really paid much attention to the lyrics…until last night, that is.

I have to say, I might be a touch disturbed by it. Not because the lyrics are so much worse than anything else out there, but because the lyrics echoed the sentiments of a serial killer.

At least, that’s how it sounds to me.

The song in question is “Somewhere a Clock is Ticking” by Snow Patrol. Here are some of the lines that have me thinking serial killer, even when I didn’t have Dexter and Criminal Minds on the brain:

“I could do most anything to you…”

“Don’t you breath”

“You can’t leave”

“Doors slam shut”

Okay, I’ll be the first to admit that those lines in and of themselves aren’t exactly the same thing as singing about outright murdering people, but when you consider there are very few lyrics in the song at all, well…you tell me.

Below you’ll find a fan video someone posted on YouTube for Somewhere a Clock is Ticking. This is one is about Sylar from Heroes, but I found tons more, including a disturbing unrequited love fan vid about Morgan and Reid on Criminal Minds. I selected this one because, well, the subject matter fits with my discussion and I was too distracted by the homoerotic subtext in the Criminal Minds video. (And the ones without anything to look at on the screen were boring to me)

So feel free to check out the other creations, but please do let me know your thoughts on the underlying meaning of the song before you go.

Grrr…Okay, so the Sylar fan vid doesn’t allow embedding so you have to go to YouTube to watch it there. So, instead, I actually bring you the Criminal Minds fan vid of this song below. Sorry. Try not to be distracted like I was!
